True. The fact that those who take the time to care are seen as exceptional says less about the few who give a damn and more about the many who don’t. One of my favorite quotations from a preacher came from a guy named Tony Campolo. He said this during a sermon:
“I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.”
Christianity has reached a sad state of affairs, but there are some lights in that darkness. If you care to, I’d recommend reading Shane Claiborne’s book, The Irresistible Revolution. I don’t know if you remember Nikki Canady (I’m sure you know she’s in the Peace Corps helping in Cambodia right now), but it’s pretty much her favorite book ever.
